Incidence and Frequency
The prevalence of the type of Dystonia that affects multiple body parts is between 0.2 and 6.7 cases per 100,000 population. When only one body part is affected, the incidence is at least 30 cases per 100,000 population (Nutt, et al.1988). It is estimated that 350,000 people have some form of Dystonia in NA alone however, this value does not take into account that Dystonia can coincide with other medical conditions such as Parkinson's disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Cerebral Palsy, Wilson's disease etc. Thus, the actual number of cases may be much higher in the overall general population. There is a rising incidence in focal or task-specific distains among musicians, artists, writers and golfers.
