Screening for Dystonia
For most patients, there is no clear-cut diagnostic test for diagnosing Dystonia. However, most patients undergo the following tests during the screening process of Dystonia:
-
Bone X-rays
-
Bone marrow
-
Brain Imaging- C.T Scan, PET Scan, MRI
-
FDOPA
-
Copper, slit lamp eye exams
-
CSF Exam
-
DNA testing for the DYT1 gene
-
EEG
-
VEP
-
EMG
-
Nerve Conduction Studies
-
Muscle and nerve biopsies
-
Video Monitoring
Not every person needs all of the above-mentioned tests and studies. Often, the tests are done to rule-out secondary causes of Dystonia. Ask your health care provider about these tests. There is no specific laboratory test or x-ray test for Dystonia today. Instead, diagnosis of Dystonia rests on the neurological exam and clinical exam. Therefore it is extremely important to locate and obtain medical care from a physician knowledgeable in Dystonia and its' management. This is crucial for you and your family as no cure for the disorder is available yet.
